this is the first instalment of my free britney series. each week, i will take a closer look at a key player in the conservatorships leading up to the next court hearing on september 29*
“i’m not happy. i can’t sleep. i am so angry it’s insane. and i’m depressed. i cry every day.” britney spears said during one part of her impassioned plea to the court on june 23, 2021.
there are not many times britney has spoken about the conservatorship. interviews that occurred post-conservatorship were only granted under famously insanely controlled circumstances. the only other time britney spoke candidly about the conservatorship was in her 2008 documentary for the record.
so much has changed since 2008 but none of it for the better, i fear. even the language we use when we talk about britney, especially during 2007, is still tinted with shades of untruth. they reflect on what was said about britney instead of what was actually happening. people intending to reflect on the past with kinder eyes are still seeming to miss the mark.
